Archived Trip Records

Smith Island, Sea of Cortez (Baja California, Mexico); December 1994. Sea kayaking, 6 days.
Journal; photography (courtesy PDC).
Author's Note: includes an account of being (briefly) marooned on a desert island.
Sequoia National Park (California); June 1996. Hiking, 4 days.
Trip record and account; photography (courtesy Paul Blair).
Author's Note: I had fun with this one; the account is accurate enough, but told in a Mannered and High Comic style.
Zion National Park (Utah); August 1996. Hiking, 3 days.
Trip record; photography (courtesy Dan Jackson et al.).
Los Arbolitos (Baja California, Mexico); February 1997 (& August 1996). Sea kayaking, 3 days.
Trip record and account; photography (courtesy of the wily and intrepid Gene McKenna, who has his own page dedicated to our frequent resorts to the Arbolitos, with an overlapping selection from the photographs he took on this particular trip).
Author's Note: the Arbolitos is a slice of paradise. A group of us return to it every year; this is an account both of how we found the site one summer and of the first annual Gathering the following winter. Includes an Appendix of injuries suffered on trips to this location. Gene's photography is magnificent, and the account is worth checking out for that reason alone.
Zion National Park (Utah) & Joshua Tree National Park (California); February-March 1997. Hiking, 6 days total.
Trip record; photogaphy (courtesy PDC and myself).
Canyonlands National Park (Utah) & Arches National Park (Utah); May 1997. Hiking, 3 days and 1 day respectively.
Trip record and account; photography (courtesy all participants).
Author's Note: This is chiefly interesting for the description of one of the strangest, most dramatic places on earth. The photography is very much worth checking out, but sadly the panoramic camera I brought with me was damaged and every picture taken with it was lost, leaving only pics I didn't think would be sufficiently striking to warrant use of the panoramic. A gaff to rival the greatest in a life filled with more than its share of epic acts of cretinous foolishness.
Algonquin Provincial Park (Ontario, Canada); August 1997. Canoe/kayak trip, 8 days.
Trip record and brief account; photography (courtesy Lyn Bodmer et al.).
Author's Note: worth checking out for the itinerary and menu alone!
Olympic National Park (Washington); July 1998. Hiking, 3 days.
Trip record; photography (courtesy Dan Jackson).
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (Michigan); September 1998. Sea kayaking, 2 days.
Trip record and brief account; photography (courtesy PDC).
Author's Note: not many photographs here, but they manage to give a sense of one of the most dramatic settings one could hope to paddle through that I have ever seen.
Los Arbolitos (Baja California, Mexico); February 1999. Sea kayaking, 3 days.
Spring Break 1999 Journal Part I; photography (courtesy Matt Elkin).
Author's Note: includes an account of death-defying antics on rough seas; I think it makes for a pretty gripping adventure story. It also includes some great photographs.
Death Valley National Park (California); March 1999. Hiking, 3 days.
Spring Break 1999 Journal Part II; photography (courtesy PDC).
Author's Note: I think this one is probably fairly entertaining as well, although not as dramatic as Part I; the photography is definitely worth looking at.
Feedback and Supplemental Information, courtesy Patrick Raulerson.
Grand Canyon National Park (Arizona) & Bryce Canyon National Park (Utah); May 1999. Hiking, 3 days and 2 days respectively.
Journal; photography.
Author's Note: I fear the journal is overlong, but the photographs are purely mind-boggling.
Isle Royale National Park (Michigan); August 1999. Touring kayak trip, 4 days.
Trip record and account; photography.
Author's Note: what an amazing trip; I think this account manages to give a sense of the magic and mystery of the setting.
Prince William Sound: Harriman Fjord/Barry Arm/Port Wells (Alaska); August 2000. Touring kayak trip, 8 days.
Trip record and account; photography.
Author's Note: An epic trip, with orca, bears, and glaciers; enough said.
